Transmission temp gauge

Well, here we go again.

I put an Autometer tranny temp gauge in my E4OD. I put it in the test port. What I need to know is what are "normal" temps? Driving around town it will usually run around 180. Pulling on the highway (9K trailer) it has gotten almost to the 210 mark. Are these acurate according to normal? I see some saying they run at 160 degrees, that seems cool to me.

Also I have been reading the ongoing debate as to wheather to put the sensor in the test port, or fluid exit hose.

I would like to get some knowledgable answers. I have been reading alot of stuff from self proclaimed experts.

So help me out guys.

BTW '94 F-250 460 E4OD.

Thanks

Frank

These sound like reasonable trans temps. If you install a external trans cooler you may see the lower temps some are talking about (160*F). The max trans temp (for automatics) should never exceed 250*F, the ATF starts to break down at that temp. As for the best location for the sensor, that would be in the trans "out" line just after the transmission and before the cooler or radiator. This is the point where the fluid is at the highest temp, as it leaves the transmission to get cooled. This way you can monitor the highest temps of your transmission fluid.
If your trans temp is usually running around 200-220*F make sure you change your ATF and filter often to increese your transmissions life.

Here is one of many charts on the web for atf temperature... http://www.txchange.com/heatchrt.htm

I have a permacool gauge on my tranny, 94 F250 E4OD and I tow an 8,000# trailer. I run Mobil 1 ATF.

Around town with no trailer I will get maybe 180 to 190 on a hot day especially if I see lots of hills. On cool days I may not get past 130, and it may take an hour to get there.

With the trailer I will see upto 220, so far, on long uphills. I am tempted to get a larger cooler but since the majority of the year I run cool I am waiting for my next big tow thru the Eastern Oregon desert in a couple weeks. If it kicks over 220 in the Blue mtns, I will probably put on an aux cooler in series with the factory cooler.

Just my opinion,

Jim Henderson

Thanks Jim.

Where do you have your sensor placed? These sound like the temps I am getting from the test port.

I have my sensor placed inside the Permacool auxillary filter. It has a spin on fitting that holds a regular size spin on oil filter. The temp sensor(Thermistor) is treaded into that. The sensor is on the output(hot) side of the tranny with the oil going to the radiator cooler next.

BTW, on my 250, the only place with enough room for the filter adapter was under the windshield washer water tank and mounted on the Fender well. Since the well is plastic, I had to route a ground wire, otherwise the sensor would not work.

My gauge is mounted on that little flat blank spot on the right side of the instrument cluster of my 250. The meter's light is tapped off of the headlight switch dimmer circuit and the meter power is off some convenient circuit that is off the ignition.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I want to install a temp guage for my tranny as well. I have been doing a lot of reading and most people are saying they put the temp guage sending unit in the test port of their tranny. Where is the test port located on a E4OD? I have a 98 F-150 5.4L 4X4. Also are there better temp guages than others? And where should I go to get a tranny temp guage?

Thank you so much for any help!

Bryan;

I have mine in the tesat port and get exactly the same temps as the ones in the exit lines. The test port is about halfway back on the drivers side of the transmission. It is 7/16 I believe, but don't quote me, it has been a while. That is for the E4OD tranny, any others, I don't know.

I also found that by bypassing the radiator section of the transmission cooling circuit it reduced my temp considerably. I run from the c-6 to the after market cooler back the the tranny. Temp sensor is in the output line.

I'd be careful eliminating the radiator circuit as I understand in the winter this keeps the tranny up to operating temperature.

Frank, I had mine installed in the pan when I had service contract work done on my transmission. Was told there was no service port on my 97.

I had problems after getting the transmission work done..I was seeing temps up to 250 degrees at 65 MPH with outside temps at 95 degrees. I took it back multiple times for minor leaks.

I cannot explain what happened, but the more times I drove it over a 2 month period, the lower the temp came down. Lately it never gets above 180/190, regardless of the temp outside. Most of the time it is 160 degrees +/- 10.

I use Mobil 1 syn. tranny fluid, I've read it will run cooler then normal tranny fluid.

Mine tops out about 195-200 on hot days pulling on the highway. I get about the same as you otherwise.

I put mine in the pan, seems like that's the temp. you would want to monitor. I also added aux. cooler, runs 150 -180 down the road, ('01 F-250 V10 4x4)

Temperatures increasing lately

I installed in the pan. For the first couple of years normal was about 160, getting up to 180 sometimes in the summer.

It got up to 190 today in the cool of the evening. Normal seems to be 175-185 now. I also noticed that the temp increases when in park. True, there is no air flow, but neither is the trans under load.

Recently changed out coolant and engine temp is now a little lower than before, so there is no increase tied to trans heating. There is no aux trans cooler.

Trans fluid level ok.

I realize that these temps are not dangerous yet, but I see no explanation.

Any suggestions on causes for the increase?

Mike
