Unhappy steering and brake conversion close

Hey, I'm hours from completing my conversions, however, I was installing the booster push rod to my brake pedal and it's an inch short?!!!!!! My truck is a 1973 f-100 4x4 360\390 C6. The doner truck is a 1978 F150 4x4 4spd. I took the dana 44 w/disc brakes, master, booster, proportioning valve, brake lines, steering box, linkage, drop pitman, and power steering pump. Steering is done and seems to work great. The brakes are all done, lines installed, booster and master installed, but the booster rod seems to not fit the same. When compared to the original booster they seemed the same in length. I did notice the 78 brake pedal is alittle different, being a 4spd truck. What to do? Can I put the 78 pedal in my 73? Is there a differant pivot point in my 73? Or do I need to find a different booster? I'm sssoooooo close to finally being done!!!! Help me. SOS!!

If you had manual brakes in the 73 you need to use whole brake pedal and bracket from the 78. mechanical advantages are different from man to pwr, if you look on the side of the pedal you should see it stamped on the side, man or pwr. Ok enough about that all it takes to change the whole bracket is 4 bolts under the dash, it should work, although the pedal will be smaller and the clutch pedal will have to go. Just compare the holes from both brackets. When I did this to my 77 I used 79 parts, and it used a booster that the parts store didn't stock, but I got it the next day, and it worked great. Just remember for future reference what the parts came from should you ever need to order new ones.

So did you put the radius arms from the 77 under the 73? I am planning on doing that to a 64. Did you drill the holes through the frame to mount the spring and shock brackets plus the steering gear? Was it diffcult to locate the radius arms on the frame?

Thanks Phinxter, I got this alittle late. Found out that the brake pedal was all I needed this weekend. I just pulled the pivot pin out of the both of them, removed the pedals, compared and swapped keeping my pivot pin due to it is part of the clutch pedal on the 78. The pedals are the same as far as where your foot goes, in fact I put my rubber cover on the pedal marked "MAN". The travel is great. This truck turns and stops like a dream now. Jenks47, I don't want to confuse you, our trucks are different. I used my radius arms (1973 f-100) The only holes I drilled were for the 1978 intigeral power steering box about approx. 24 inches from the tip of the 1973 f-100 frame. These conversions are not as difficult as people make them sound. Your best bet is finding the exact truck you need, and putting it on jack stands next to your truck. The rest just comes as you swap over parts, a real hands on education. Oh, yea, my doner truck was free too!!!! thats the best part. see ya

Thanks youngblue. I have the donor parts. A 77 F150 custom and a 79 F150 Ranger.

Everything seems to measure out. Right now I am working on putting the power steering pump on a 5 liter with a serpintine belt. Are the raduis arms on the 73 simular to the 77 and 79's?

They were on mine. 1973 f-100, doner was 1978 f-150. I kept my 73 radius arms due to I had already painted them. Used 2 degree off-set bushings, super lift radius drop brackets 2 or 3 inches I don't remember. I have a 3 or 4 inch suspension lift that came with the truck. 35 inch BFG's. Like I always say, park them next to each other and compare to see what you need to do for your swap, I may know some answers but not all of them.

re-youngblue

Hey youngblue. I have a 1973 f100 4x4 and have been researching on what exactly i need to do for me to get power steering. Am i going to have to raise the body? If i get the parts out of a 78, will i have to do any fabricating or drilling? Any help from anyone is much appreciated. My arms thanks you.

I did the integral PS swap from a 79 Bronco to my 73 4x4. Yes, you'll have to drill the frame. I sleeved mine for more strength. The inner fender will also require trimming to clear the PS gear.

First, a few notes:

1. I sleeved my frame instead of simply drilling holes for the mounting bolts.
2. You can source the pressure fittings new from Jegs or Summit but I had no clue on what to get so I brought both pressure hoses to a hydraulic shop and got a custom line fabbed up.
3. The 78-79 T-style drag link and tie rod is waaay better then the Y-style found in 76-77.
4. After removing the tie rod from the donor, loosely reinstall the tie rod and measure how much "stick-out" the tie rod shank is exposed and keep a record of that measurement. You'll likely need to ream your D44s steering arm holes because the later tie rod has a thicker shank. I thought they were all the same but alas, they were not. It's a 7.15-degree taper (equivalent to 1.5 inches of taper per foot).
5. On my 73, the steering column shaft is a 3/4-36. The Bronco shaft was also 3/4-36 but a single D. I grinded a flat spot on the 73's steering shaft to fit the Bronco shaft. Also had to collapse the Bronco shaft until it fit between the rag joint and the steering column shaft.
6. On an FE, the oil filter might interfere with the steering box location. If so, install a Fram PH16 (or equivalent). The PH16 is the same diameter but shorter than a PH8 (or equivalent).

Here is the list (and less expensive if you can beg or borrow a reamer!):
