Thanks, my local Ford dealership was nice enough to fax the TSB to me and he quoted me a price of $1200 to do all of it. I believe the problem is related to the front. I jacked both rear wheels up and stepped on the gas. The result was very smooth operation from any speed all the way up to 80. I've been told this is just the nature of the Explorer front end so maybe once again my expectations are too high. I've been living with it
for 5 years. The stock tires are 225/70-15. I'm debating on spending extra on a high quality set such as Michelins or Goodyear Wranglers the next time I replace them. Any tire recommendations would be appreciated.
When I bought it with 120k miles, It had a vibration problem. It seems I have more tire balance problems than anyone I know. I had to take it back three times before they got it right. They finally broke down the tires and checked for loose particles inside them. But I finally did get a good balance job, and it lasted several months. I could drive 70+ mph for hours without shaking.
I don't know about the TSB; guess Ford knows what they are doing. But I wouldn't spend that much money.
I have been driving for 40+ years and in my experience when you have a vibration, there is something out of balance - not loose.
Having loose components amplifies the problem, but does not cause it. Vibration is caused by some rotating component out of balance - either a wheel/tire or driveline component.
