speedometer

My speedometer dosn't work in my 84 f-250 I replaced the cable and the gauge its self but it still dosn't work. could the gear in the transfer case be stripped? If so how hard is it to replace? When I spin the cable the gauge works. It didnt work before so at least I gained somthing.

Not sure which engine/transmission/transfer case you have, but heregoes for general information:

If it's the driven gear (the part that hooks to the cable) it's really easy to replace...just pull out the bolt that holds the bracket that holds in the gear assembly, pull out the gear holder and shaft and replace the gear itself, then reassemble.

If it's the drive gear (on the shaft), that's a bit more tricky, requiring removal of driveline the tailshaft cover on the transfer case to be able to slide the gear off.

It's usually the driven gear, so you will most likely be in luck. Just make sure to get the right gear when you put it back together, and make sure the gears all line up.

Hope that helps a little...

They are more than likely both shot. I would replace them both at the same time. Nothing to it. If you don`t, you will have similiar problems again shortly. Do you have a fixed yoke or a slip yoke? Here are instructions for both. Before doing the following steps, remove the small driven gear (that Dan mentioned) from the side of the transfer case and replace it. Do not re-install it yet! As Dan also said, the slip yoke is a little tricky. You will have to remove the tail housing (good time to replace that leaking seal). There will be a horseshoe looking clip around the output shaft behind the drive gear (motor side). Pop the clip out/off, slide the drive gear towards your motor, remove the steel ball and slide the drive gear off of the shaft. Reverse this process to install. Make sure you install the gear in the right direction. The groove in the i.d. of the gear that sits on the ball faces rearward. Once you put the ball back in place, the gear slides rearward over it and the clip holds the gear on the ball. I have seen them put in backwards which in turn leaves nothing to hold the gear in place. Install new gasket or silicone the old one. The fixed yoke is a breeze. Remove the yoke, remove the seal and slide the drive gear out. Reverse to install. Don`t forget to torque the yoke to the proper specs. BTW, the drive gears are different for the fixed yoke and slip yoke transfer cases. Slip yoke drive gears are solid plastic, nylon or whatever they are made of. The fixed yoke will have a steel sleeve in it that just slides on the output shaft and is held in place when you torque the yoke. Be sure and count the number of teeth on your gears as color of gear does not mean anything, contrary to what some will tell you. Sorry for being so long winded. Hope this helps. Bob
