I got a 6K tach at Jeggs or maybe it was Summit Racing (smaller face). But again, the lighting was not great and like the Datcon, this one also was around $65. I think it is an Autogauge by Autometer. I really like the big face on the Datcon. Strange, the best lighting on a tach is the cheapo $26 tach I got from Whitney that turns out to be an (I think) Eqquis. Really nice and bright and uniformly lit all the way around.
They also have digital tachs, but that's rather funky.
Mine is a '93 and I put in a stock tach cluster from another truck (Bronco I think it was). It was NOT a straight swap, because I had to change the pinout on the plugs for two wires (one of which is the Green w/red wire that carries the excitation to the alternator VERY IMPORTANT). Anyway if you really want a tach you can just buy my truck since I just purchased an '04 6.0L F250 SD 4x4 CC etc... My truck (the '93 4.9L 4x4) I believe was the first on this forum to undergo the ZF 5-spd conversion (followed closely by Freakazoid!) and many other upgrades. I spent $3000 on parts last year alone getting ready for off-roading in Colorado and I am currently asking only $3500 for the truck. Sorry, hijacked the thread. My apologies and I'll miss you guys.
I might have found a cluster from a 92 f-150 with a tach, the junk yard will be calling me. I then plan on putting it in as described in one of the tech article on this site. Thanks again
I like the stock tach for location and lighting, but wish it did not go all the way to 6000 rpm for the 300 I6. I suspect Ford now has one tach for all gasoline engine vehicles. That would explain the 6000 rpm and no redline marked on it. The do, however, have a lower RPM tach (have seen it, can't remember if 3500 rpm or what) for the diesels.
A friend has a '03 Ranger Edge with a V-6 and 5 spd. I know it's not an I-6, but the factory tach goes to 6,000 with no redline. He has put it on 6,000 many times too and it feels like it is still barely pulling when it gets there. It will get 2nd gear rubber too! Too bad the governor shuts it down at 90, without it I'd be willing to bet it would do the 120 on the speedo. I'm impressed with it, also the factory stereo is really nice too, 6 dsic changer and sounds like it has a 10" behind the seat, we've had people ask what kindof subs were in the back. Little hotrod. I
I'd also like to find a tach for my I-6. I am having a hard time getting it to idle right with the 1bbl carb. I can't tell by the engine sound what rpm it is but if I had to guess it is about 1,200 or so right now, what does one normally like to idle at? Around 700?
I installed a aftermarket sunpro tach in my '94 F-150 w/I6. All i did was look it up in the wiring diagram on my shop manual and found out that the white with the pink tracer(i think that was the one) behind the gauge cluster was for the tach signal. I hooked it up like the instructions said to and set the tach to 6 cyl. and it works great.
