Transmission

Have a 93 3.0 with 188,000 miles. Still runs fine, but transmission will not upshift from 2 to 3.
New Vacuum modulator installed and fluid changed.
Also has the lag when going into reverse.
Any suggestions to get 3rd gear back?

I'm not sure but with the mileage you have maybe it could be time to adjust the bands. It should be found on the driver's side of the tranny, check for specs on this forum or get the specs.from a manuel or tranny shop.I know I have to check mine before I leave on a east to westcoast trip which I hope my tranny can make it.I will keep you posted before I leave, just a couple of weeks left.

Band specs for a A4LD is 10ftlb. Loosen the lock nut, tighten the band adjusting screw to 10ftlbs or 120 inch pounds depending on what type torque wrench you are using. Once that is done back the adjusting screw out 2 turns. Hold the adjusting screw in place and tighten the lock nut back down. Both Adjusting screws are withen 6 inches of each other so if you find one the other is close by.

MojoHobo-I just took my 89 shorty 3.0L from seattle to San Diego and back- Only have 70K on the car and still managed to loose reverse in Oregon on the trip back (good old A4LD strikes again), lots of Mountains here and had the vehicle loaded pretty good, I think I should have used D instead of the OD option due to the weight. Lots of posts in this forum about that issue, most people have luck using D vice OD on long trips with weight. I would highly reccomend fluid and filter change before and after the trip. Good luck and have fun

Have no fear, as long as it keeps going forward all is well. No reverse is a pain, however, its just a matter of finding the right parking spot or bringing my two teenage boys with me. Either way works fine. I did see the post as to the tranny filter, as a matter of fact when I did mine I was thinking about that exact post. Lucky for me the filter was only 1 bolt and the new one matched perfectly. Enjoy
Joe
PS- might think about bringing some extra tranny fluid and maybe a bottle of tranny stop leak for emergency purposes only. I brought everything I thought I would need if some thing went wrong, and there I was Half way up a verry step graded mountain on Hiway 5 in the HOOOOOT california waste land with some pretty cranky family members and a tranny that was puking fluid from the seal all over the exhaust pipe, made soo much smoke I thought I blew the engine, needless to say I will never forget that stuff ever again.
