here goes, I purchased a 97 F-250, 6.9L N/A 100% oil burner, i paid $100.00 USD there was a broken conn. rod, i purchased a motor from a local junk yard $500.00. Having never installing an engine I'd say i did pretty good.. first attempt at starting the engine sounded like it was backfiring... on the advice of a "so called" diesel mechanic i traded injection pumps, unfortunately i removed the pump housing along with the pump... i got lucky and lined the pump up enough to get the engine running... i drove the truck one week and had an awful time of exhaust manifold overheating, after reading some of the threads here i assumed it was timing i collected some information from this site and attempted to re-align the gear properly, i read that you line up the Y on the pump gear with the O on the cam gear??? that is what i did and now it wont start at all i get some popping and lots of noise through the intake almost like backfiring! if i crank long enough it will run for 3 seconds revving extremely high and smoking like a freight train. I have pulled all my hair out and my wife is getting ready to have me shot! a lucky find is turning out to be a nightmare, please help is you can, thanks!
Well, i hope you're talkin about a 87 with the 6.9L in it. How did you know the exhaust manifold was overheating - is there a pyrometer connected to the manifold? Sometimes when they are first started, you have to get the air out of the fuel system - this may sound like missing and backfiring. The timing marks are visible from the front of the gearing - did you remove the front cover to align the marks? The "o" on the crank and the "o" on the cam will line up and the "y" on the pump drive and the "y" on the cam gear will line up. Many times there is even a coloring placed on the gears to line them up without removing the front covers. The tops of the teeth on the cam gear will have the color on them and the "y" will drop between that. I dont know the conditions that the junk yard engine was stored in , perhaps some water got into it and may be causing problems. Also some of the injectors could be weak and popping backwards, making the engine miss or run ruff. Hope this helps get your scooter going. If this doesnt help, watch for Malcolm to get in here. He can hear your engine running from where he is.
Bilder thanks for the quick response, Didn't know there was a Y on the cam gear i used a dental mirror and timing marks to find the "O" I didn't see any painted marks other than the ones i put in there... certainly dont have water issues i actually ran the engine for 1 week prior to removing the IP, i was told that i could have had the IP 180 deg out and it would still run. as far as the overheating a mechanic told me that if the housing was removed and it was overheating that the pump was probably retarded too much and causing the fuel to burn longer thus causing the overheating problem... I will remove the pump again and look for a Y on the cam gear or an O on the pump gear... thanks again for the quick response! Also there is a felow that has offered me another truck 89 f-250 that is dead for a parts truck it has a 7.3L will parts fit on the 6.9?
well, i checked the inj pump gear and there is only a Y on it.. there is only an O on the cam gear. so unfortunately the info did not help... thanks anyway....** new information: i bled the lines and managed to get it started... wow what a noise! i had all sorts of noise coming from the intake... extremely loud like a stock car... glub glug glub... i know that it is not supposed to be that loud... also lots of black smoke from exhaust at idle...runs ruff... remember i had the truck running just two days ago and it ran smoothly i was advised to re-align the pump gear to the cam gear by a seasoned diesel mech. (due to overheating probs.) that rules out the bad inj pump or faulty injectors..... some one please help! dave or malcolm i need help !!!!!!!!!!!!pretty please?
first an apology to bilder12 you were correct and i just didn't understand what i read, <blushing> consider this thread closed... I figured it out, what i did was used an old ip gear marked off the Y and found the exact opposite point and marked it off lined the y with the o and rotated the crank till the opposite line was centered on the lower gear, pulled the #1 glow plug out and checked for TDC dropped in the injection pump and tower and voila.... it fired right away after bleeding out the air purrs like a kitten on crack but what a difference.. thanks to those that gave input! much appreciated!
if your in california you can email me and i'll stop by (I have a 6.9 diesel) so you can check to see if you have everything set up right. shrugs just a thought.
