I have 2000 mi and would like to change the break-in oil. Saw a post earlier of someone saying they get rotella synthetic at Walmart for $12-something per gallon. I've been to 3 Walmarts here in Southern California now. The stores are nice and neat... until you get to the motor oil aisle. Looks like a tornado just hit or something. Oils all mixed together, a big mess and no rotella synthetic. Does anyone know if So Cal walmarts stock this stuff and if so, how much?
I would wait a little longer before going to Synthetic.. 15-20k seems to be the ideal time to switch, allow everthing in the motor to seat,,.. I have 12k on my 04 cc since march and been running regular Rotella T since 4k miles, still debating to switch to synthetic or not myself. I been buying the Rotella T at wal-mart for $6.28 a gal,,
I bought it in Austin, TX. It comes in the gallon jugs that are kind of purplish in color. (my wife would have some flowery name for the color). I have found that the CI-4 rated diesel oil can be just about anywhere on the oil aisle.
I saw it today in a Dallas area Walmart. This is a good oil.
You can run this oil after the initial break in period. I would run the break in oil for 5,000 then change to the synthetic. The only thing you are trying to wear in and seat is the rings. These should be fully seated by 5,000 miles. Everything else will love the synthetic, especially the injectors which are substantially quieter with synthetic.
