I ran an old streetmaster on my 390, .040" over, stock bottom end, edlebrock heads, and it ran fine. My opinion is that these 390's have such great low rpm torque that you can get away with a single plane.
This winter I did switch to the RPM intake, but I also installed the RPM cam...so can't tell you which helped the most...but hold on above 3000 rpm
