My 94 Explorer is leaking gas from the top of the gas tank. I think that the seal has gone bad. I'm looking for advice/helpful hints on replacing the parts. Does anyone have experience doing this? What are some things I should watch out for? Thanks for the help.
You will have to drop the tank in order to fix it correctly.
Your tank opening where the fuel pump and sending unit assembly as well as supply and return lines enter has a flat rubber o-ring seal. It could have been installed improperly, it could just be loose, or it could be defective.
There is a plastic "jar cap" which holds the assembly against the gasket and to the tank (assuming you have a plastic tank). I was able to remove mine by hand.
You will need to relieve the fuel pressure, then disconnect the electrical connector, supply, return, and vent lines before dropping the tank.
I have also seen a problem with the metal line feed-through where it goes through the flange. I used jb-weld to fix mine.
Also, the insulator where the electrical connector feeds through can leak. Again jb-weld does the trick.
Just a note to all owners, the sending unit for the fuel is designed in a very interesting way. At the top of the unit there is a small area that is excellent for collecting water. This in turn helps rust the fittings to the gas lines. My truck was a '94 and the gas leak was due to rusted pipes. Have fun replacing the sending unit, removing the skid plate and all.
