1998 Explorer Alarm problem
When does your alarm go off? When there's wind or car driving by? A few months ago I started to have this problem. The problem was traced to the switch/alarm sensor under the hood. It somehow got shifted so that it barely makes contact with the hood. When wind blows or car drive by and rattles the hood, my alarm would go off. I repositioned the switch to make better contact with the hood and the problem went away.
Hope that helps.
I've noticed it happens more often in the evenings and the mornings (ie: tempreture changing). but it goes off other times randomly also. I've had to start locking the doors manually so it won't arm the alarm since i don't want to upset my neighbors.
You can do a simple check to see if any door is open by pressing the lock button twice. If you hear two honks then it means one of the door is open. I don't think the hood is affected by this test though so if you get only one honk then all your doors are secure.
The hood switch, which is located on the right side of the engine compartment, barely made contact when the hood is closed. When there was high wind or one of those guys who wants to share music with the world drives by, the alarm goes off.
Actually, if the alarm is sensitive, you can try one of these. With the doors and hood closed, try tugging (or pushing from the inside) on the doors/hood and see if the alarms goes off. I remember after tracing the problem to the hood, I tried to lift it, even in its closed and latched position, and the alarm would go off.
I'm sorry I don't know where the sensor is for the rear door though but I will post the location if I find out.
Can a person remove the security system switch pin under the hood and reset the security system and the system work correctly? I like being able to use the keyless entry fob for my car, but when I press the lock button on the fob, the alarm goes off after 30 seconds. I found out that this occurs because of the hood pin being bent. I have readjusted it SEVERAL times, and if possible, I would like to just rid of the pin all together.
