Is there a way to figure out timing? Here's why I ask.
We have a 1990 Chev Pick Up, with a transplanted 350 that's worked over a bit. We plan on changing out a carb and a whole new exhaust. How to I determine what the timing is? We did get the engine in this truck as is, we didn't do it ourselves.
Is there a way to do this? For example...my Bronco shoulld be timed at 10*btdc...how'd they figure that out?
Also, how can you safely test the quality of spark plug wires? I put new wires on my Bronco, and it runs like trash now, missing often, and what not. New plugs, cap and rotor, but I feel that I may have gotten a set of crappy wires...how do I know?
well u can advance it as much as u want you just need to test it under a load to see if it pings if it does pull it back some .. if it doesnt u can advance it some
just put it at whatever it runs best at is what i would do
The manufacturer has figured that you want ignition completed by Top Dead Center, and then determined that it takes approximately 3/1000's of a second to burn all the mixture completely (something like that). Then they account for the engine speed in rpm, and you can figure how many degrees before tdc the spark must begin at, in order for ignition to have a full .003 of a second to complete. If I had all the formulas with me, I'd post them, but they're lost with all my other old school papers. Somebody else out there might have them, but that's roughly how it's done, if I remember correctly.
