starting problems

I have a 1991 explorer with the 4.0 six and i was wondering what is wrong with it. When i start it when the engines cold it wont start and fire up right. it just stalls, but when i turn it over the second time it starts right up. Whats the deal with it??

Sounds like it isn't getting enough fuel pressure buildup on the initial start. You can verify this by turning the ignition on and off several times before you try to start it. If it starts right up, then you either have a bad fuel pressure regulator or weak pump, faulty relay, clogged fuel filter etc.

I would rule out the clogged filter and weak pump if it runs ok under load. The relay could be intermittent. Make sure to listen for the pump running a few seconds immediately after ignition.
