I had mine done last year. No valium for me...but they put me out during the surgery (the last minute of consciousness is great..too bad it doesn't last long). Woke up in a bed in the recovery room and left. I was in pain for about 3-4 days...mostly just soreness...didn't even have pain killers (mine were not too bad so they didn't give me anything). The one thing to watch out for is since you won't be using your jaw for about 3-4 days..atleast...it'll be very sore. Ask the doc for tips on helping to prevent this.

Uppers: Cake
Lowers: Watchout. Sometimes they have to blast.
And: DID YOU SEE YOUR XRAY? Make darn sure they are nowhere near the nerve in your jaw. This is a common problem. If they cut that nerve it's drool city..... No joke.
My brother-in-law is a dental malpractice insurance lawyer. He has to defend these all the time.
Good luck...

Well--I can't imagine a dentist that would do removals and not be aware, but glad to hear he brought it up and is aware.
You'll be fine.
OH YEA, and if you get the "twilight" deal with the IV sedation, here is a bonus of that deal:
You know how some folks aways talk about how a certain maximum penalty is cruel and painful? Well, you are getting step one of that penalty when you get that twilight IV. Now you can say you know first hand how it is, and it ain't bad.
We'll all sleep better knowing that....

I had mine pulled out about 15 years ago. It wasn't as bad as people said it was going to be. Had it done in a dental surgeons's office - counted backwards from 100, got to about 96.......woke up 45 min later and it was all over. Had to have someone there to drive me home because the knock out gas stayed in the system for a few hours.
No pain at all in the following days, just followed the directions I'd been given: use a syringe to spray from anti-biotic was over all four incisions for a few days, then watch how I ate for a few weeks.
On the down side, about 3 weeks later I figured everything was ok - ate some popcorn one night and two days later the left side of my jaw was the size of a baseball.....a popcorn kernel had somehow found its way under the healing skin in my jaw where my wisdom teeth were coming through. A trip back to the dental surgeon fixed the problem in a few minutes and that was the last I ever thought of the subject.
Good luck - hope your surgery goes as well as mine did - just don't eat any popcorn any time soon afterwards

Man, I guess I went thru torture compared to the above stories. I had one lowwer one pulled (the old fashion way) about 10 yrs. ago. I didn't have insurance and we were tight on money, so living were I do, we went south of the border. Got a quick x-ray and the Doc said it should come out no problem. I just got some local anesthesia, and then it was brace yourself. All I could hear was bone crunching in my head. I know it sounds third world, but it wasn't bad, didn't really hurt, just sore for a few days. No painkillers, just some antibiotics. I think the bill was $75.

I think everyone gets a set.
The do the following:
--sit below the gum and you never know they are there.
--poke out of the gum, cause discomfort, leads to removal (me, top one, easy removal)
--become infected, causing you years of discomfort, bad breath, illness etc till you get them pulled.
--they impact your other teeth and push them out of alignment. (me, other top one, still there as the damage is done, no point causing trouble at this time)
I'm sure there are other things they can do for you.
