Reverse Sensor Going Off

I Have A 2003 X, And When The Vehicle Is In Reverse The Sensor Keeps
Beeping Even If There Is Nothing Behind Us. Sometimes It Does It When You Have It In Reverse And Your Foot Is On The Brake And The Vehicle Is Not Even Moving. Has Anyone Else Had This Problem Or Know What It Might Be?

Probably dirty...
maybe wire pulled out ???
but it WILL beep ANY time in reverse if it senses a curb or bush or person...
it doesn't need to be moving is what I'm trying to say...

when did u first notice it ?
my first question is "What changed just before it first started acting up?"

I've found that my reverse sensor will produce a solid beep any time it is hotter than around 86-88 degrees outside. Living in So-Cal, this means it doesn't work much during the daytime right now, but in the evenings it seems to work just fine.... Can't wait for winter though...

I had the same problem that slowly got worse. Ended up being an open in the circuit. I had already pretty much troubleshot it, and then let the dealer do his stuff...took him about 20 minutes to figure out which sensor it was. The way I figured out which one it was is by turning on the ignition without starting the engine and then shifting to reverse. I then went to the back and crawled underneat (all the while, the indicator has been beeping at me). I then one by one completely covered each sensor without being the the path of the other sensors. When the faulty sensor was completely covered, the beeping stopped. I then called my dog over and as she approached, the remaining sensors worked properly. After the dealer worked on it, I asked him which sensor...he pointed out the one I had already diagnosed.

Any idea how I can diagnose my sensors? I just replaced the switch in the dash for $17. It did not fix the problem. I get no beeps, the OFF light sometimes comes on when driving, then goes out. What happens if I unplug sensors one at a time? If one was faulty, perhaps the others would then work? Not sure how these things work.

A lot of these sensors suffer from a poor seating at the connector. The rubber seals swell and the connector unseats. I just pull the rubber seal out and put electrical grease or silicone in there and then reseat it fully. They are poorly designed connectors.

Robert,

I had to revive this thread as I am having basically the same problem. My dash switch "off" light comes on when I put the X in reverse and I also "get no beeps". The "off" switch cannot be reset until I put the X in another gear other than "reverse" and the "off" light comes on again ANYTIME I put the X in "reverse" again. And no beeps.

I need some help....

I guess I am very guilty of one thing....can not give up my X for a single day to have them look at it.
I talked to the dealer a while back when I had my daughter's focus in for a windshield replacement under warranty, and asked the service manager about it. He was very willing to work with me and understood how I feel about leaving it with them for any period of time. Of course, I confessed first before I let him try to schedule it for an appt.
He said it would likely be the module that has gone bad....sounds like he might know from past experience on that one. He said to bring it in and let them diagnose it. If it was something simple, it likely would be fixed the same day, otherwise I could pick up the X while the part is on order and they would get it out in a day when the part comes back in.
I am getting anxious to get it fixed and am getting very close to biting the bullet and taking it in likely within the next few weeks.
I will let ya'll know what the results are once it is fixed.

Thanks for getting back to me Robert. I notice also that some members here (and other similar threads) suggest that we can "reseat", "grease", "diagnose" etc.

But can someone first tell me and/or Robert specifically how to get to the sensor connection? Also folks this is not the problem of a constanty beeping sensor. This is a problem of no beeping sensor and the "off" light on the dash coming on by itself.

I am familiar with and had the problem of the constant beeping sensor from ice, water, or snow and that problem always goes away when things dry up. This current problem seems to need a fix.

So how do we get to the sensors to check the connections or to diagnose a bad one?

And Robert...any idea what "module" the dealer is refering to. I may just take my X in for diagnosis anyway....

No idea where the module is. Saw in a post a while back where someone took theirs in and it was the module. The module is what controls the entire reverse system...I guess kind of like it's computer and the cost was approx. $500, but theirs was covered under warranty. I have an extended warranty, so should be covered as well.

Robert H,

Let me know what the fix is when you take it in, my F250 just started to do that today. I can belive that it might be the control module, my power locks dont work either, and I have narrowed it down to the control module. Just dont want to pay $500 to fix
Thanks
Jim
