ticking from back left
weird and annoying: a tick-tock noise from inside the self-levelling suspension unit in the left hand compartment in back... sounds like a clock ticking, mostly.. drivin me NUTS and cos there aint many Explorers in Scotland yet, getting little help! only on when engine on, and sometimes faster than usual couple-of-beats-per second. Advice would be cool. thanks

Well, perhaps you could provide a bit more information such as year, engine, model and so on. The Ride Control system does have an air pump, but it is not usually audible when driving. When does the sound occur. Maybe a small version of Nessie is living in the back of your truck? (please excuse this feeble attempt at humour...)

was thinkin it might be a haggis, maself! Yer right... info would be a help... it's a '98 4l V6... the noise is pretty much exactly as you'd get from a ticking clock, oddly - one of the old ones... like, 'tick..tock' every second or just slower. Took the access panel off and it's from somewhere inside the area that holds the self-levelling gear.. loud enough to be heard in the front, over the music! Very odd.....

It's probably electrical, you could possibly try to narrow it down by removing fuses while the noise is present so you might atleast know what circuit is feeding it. Sometimes the GEM (Generic electronic Module)-you have several of them, can emit a ticking type noise through the radio speakers. Consult your manual for the fuse circuit info. Hope this helps..

ta for the advice... worked it out in the end... a fairly enegetic off-road trip somehow jogged the wee electric connection for the towbar circuits, which were turned on and acting like I was towin something... easy matter to turn the box off, as it's never used...
