We'll be adding twins in a month or so, and I've added a third seat to my Explorer. As such, however, it's going to be the only vehicle we have that will carry all of us, so it's going to take us everywhere: daily driving, trips to grandma's house, etc.
My daughters like to go see the deer, especially in the winter when I know where they hang out. So we climb into the Explorer and go plowing through the snow up sheep creek (not plowed). Also like to go driving all over the mountains during the summer. A little camping now and then is fun, too. We rarely go to a developed campground. Like to find someplace off the beaten path and get away from everybody for a while.
It really does not get used much other than for on the road. It's my secondary vehicle and due to the high mileage it gets put into a "where I won't take my car" duty. As such, it is the vehicle I take when I go taking pictures of trains (odd hobby, eh). At least if a rock, or other debris, from the train smacks the body of it I will not be as upset as it if had hit the vehicle I am still making payments on. Other than that it gets driven up a mountain every now and then (paved road) with a trailer that my car could never tow and will be seeing winter snow duty here in Rochester (that will save me some major cash on snow tires for the car).
To the mountains of Utah! Must escape the heat of Las Vegas and go to my property north of Zion. (Disappointingly, I haven't been there once this year.) It gets muddy and snowy and we take lots of 4x4 roads up in the high plains (thats some pretty sheep country). Nothing serious like rock climbing or anything.
Also put several thousand miles in highway travel every year. Mainly to Oregon, my home state, Washington, and Idaho. Have family on the southern Oregon coast, in the Portland metropolitain area and near Coer de' lane Idaho. With the way the airlines are these days, driving is less stress and can actually be faster!
I really think the '99 Explorer captures a nice balance of highway travel and off-road capabilities. Lots of people would argue: choppy rides and mild off-road performance. But it works for me and my wife. Some say the '02 and later improved the ride, but I like a stiffer ride. I feel more connected with the road and control of the car.
not much else here either. my mustangs been sitting in the garage now since last september with no insurance becuase of college but i take the explorer to college. at least if it gets banged up a little over there (every year it does) i wont be as upset as if the stang got a door flown into the side or something. college kids are crazy around here. i was thinking before i got the explorer i shoudl get like a 89 f150 rust bucket or something so i could ram someone elses bumper when they damaged my mustang before and it wuoldnt matter. i just got this instead. i love it
