Ring gear

I have the 84 Bronco II starting screech syndrome. It won't start at all. I've removed the starter and it looks like the ring gear is chewed up. What is the best way to go about replacing this. Where can I get one?

I would pull the t case and tranny then remove flywheel or flex plate and have a machine shop press on a new one. RB

Once you've gotten the flywheel (or Flex-plate) out, look at the ring gear. If the teeth are only worn on the corners, the machine shop can flip it around, putting the undamaged side of the teeth toward the starter. It shouldn't cost more than about $10 to $20 to have them do that. It'll work as good as a new gear until the next time. Then a new ring gear will be your only option.

One thing, though; I'm not sure the ring gear is seperable from one of those Flex-plates. Besides, I think a reconditioned flex-plate only costs about $20 anyway. So if your truck has an automatic transmission, check online at PartsAmerica.com for your vehicle's replacement parts' prices. If you're wondering, no, I don't work for them. But I've used that site for ordering parts, as well as estimating my own vehicle's repair costs.
