that is the neutral switch, it is normally open when the gearshift is in gear and closed when it is in neutral. Before you bother to take it out and clean it etc. I would just take the wires off the switch, connect them together and just bump the starter switch to see if you get any reaction or if you have a dvm, you can check continuity thru the switch when the gear shift is in neutral versus engaged position, the wires should be disconnected from the switch before you try to check continuity with a dvm - REPEAT- if you try the starter bump method make sure it is in neutral cause if it fires it won't stop running for a few seconds after the ignition switch is turned off - the fuel needs to run out between the soleniod valve and the injectors

Its the simple things in life that teach me I am indeed quite stupid

OKay you are not going to beleive this. The reason why the tractor wouldnt start is because one of the gearshifts was in gear. There is two on this model. The main one which gives you a couple gears, and the small one which is hi and low. The hi and low one was in low and I was too stupid to figure it out eariler. Good old Ford pulled throgh after all!
