How well should i expect the set of 35" claws we just got to perform in the mudd (mudd bog this saturday)? The truck is a 81 3/4 ton has 3.50 gears, rear posi, no lift, a 400 engine and 4sp and 205 t-case. It was either these (which the store had and the size is 315/70/16 i think)or 33x14 boggers and we not get them in time. Also the guy that sold them has a set of 38s on his truck (dodge with a 440 with 350-400hp) and i've seen him run with these tires and he kicked the crap out of everyone else in his class. So how well shoiuld i expect these 35x12s radial claws preform?
Uhhhh, I'm not sure what to tell you, since you already got them, so I'll just state the truth. You should have gone with the 33" boggers. Claws aren't that great in the mud, they load up bad. They LOOK like they'd be great, but they aren't. They are great in the sand though. Yes, this is first hand experience. Have fun and good luck with your mud bog.
they suck! i have seen them in action and got to drive a set through some pretty sloppy mud and all they do is gum up! i mean i am sure they'd be ok if you had enough power to turn them over and keep them spinning at like 70 mph....otherwise they are just gonna slick up!
boggers would have been worth the wait but I am glad you got a set to run this weekend! good luck to ya and remember.....just have fun, that's what it's all about!
thanks, couple other things why we got them was this truck is going to be used as a spray truck and the ground is very very sandy and also the radial construction will help with that as well.
I have yet more news. For us to get these claws (we havn't made the trip to pick them up and pay for them)we need some 16x10 wheels (just cheepo white spokes). Anyway in this search we have come up one wheel short and when we called the local shop in a search of a wheel and we found out that they could get a set of 35x14x16.5 boggers down from edmonton (6-7 hours away) to the shop by thursday, so tomorrow we will call the local shop and make sure that our rims will work with the boggers they are a 9 3/4" wide rim but we don't know if the bead will work (the wheel has a tapered bead and we don;t know what the tire has for a bead) anyway we will know tomorrow
Sweet. You'll have to wind your motor up like a rubber band to make those 35" boggers work with your hp and gears but hell, they'll make a joke out of the claws.
2nd gear in low range and i should have no problem other than snapping a u-joint (both shafts are shortened with new joints) or axle or even gernading a hub.
No, 2nd gear in low range will have no problem with that. But then, it won't win any mud drags either. Do you have time to make some runs out at the farm before the races? That would help you experiment to find what works best.
On a 78 Bronco with a tired 400 and a 4.10 Dana 60 with brand-new 35" Boggers and a t-18, 1st-gear-2-hi worked, but 3rd-gear-4-lo would worked better. But that was with 4.10's. I'd say try 3rd-lo, then try 1st-hi if your clutch starts smoking.
I've tried it in 4 lo 3rd gear and 4 hi 2nd gear and with the good worn goodyear hummer tires it would bog done pretty good, but the last 2 bogs i've been to i've used 1 and 4 hi with very results the first time then sucky result the second time (more due to crapy tires) But I think that i will try it in 3rd and 4 lo, but then again it all depends on the type of mud as well.
As far as dropping the clutch (its brand new) the best way would be to rev to 2500-3000 and ride it out so i don't stall it right?
Oh and finally some good news in the tire/wheel hunt, the guy that is getting us the 35x16x16.5 boggers said he can get 12 wide wheel in time for the tires and the are around 100 (i think thats what my dad said) bucks apiece. But would a 9 inch wheel fit that wide of tire?
1st? Your 4 speed doesn't have granny 1st? If I was in 4 hi, 1st would not go fast enough. I'd rev too high and move too slowly. 2nd is too high for me though. 3rd, 4lo is right between 1st and 2nd 4hi.
I think it was 4 Wheeler magazine that compared them in a pit and the bogger and ssr out performed the claws and most every other tire by at least 1/2 the distance and the bogger was the only one to actually make it out of the mud pit/track. They basically stuck the same tire on the same jeep/rims and did runs into the pit and measured where it got stuck.
