Pertronix Ignitor or Ignitor II

My question is, I have a completely stock 71 F100, 390 with automatic, which would be better the Pertronix Ignitor or the Ignitor II. I am thinking of getting away from the points and maybe help gas mileage a little. This is not a daily driver, just a toy I am trying to restore and drive on sunny Sunday afternoons.
My big question is what is the difference in the between the two.

Well, the I is cheaper and will fill your needs but there are a couple things to consider. One quirk is you can't leave the key on with the motor off or else you'll fry the unit. Another thing is you can't put on a high-performance coil with a matching ballast because the unit can't handle that much current without burning up, 8 amps is the max.

The II does not have these limitations plus it is has variable dwell, a nice feature.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like I need the Igniter II then. Performance is not a big goal but dependably and mileage is.

Well, the Ignitor II is great but I didn't mean to poo poo the I. It works very well within it's limitations. Teamed up with the Flamethrower coil and your stock resistance wire, you can't beat the price vs performance upgrade, just don't leave the key on.

I've used both and honestly can't tell the difference between the two. I've had both on a 302 roller motor, and no difference in the seat-of-the-pants meter. As for hot coils, you can use other brands, but it needs to be one designed for points ignition to be compatible with the Ignitor. I'm using a Mallory Promaster( for points) on the Ignitor II.

Pertronix clams an improvement in fuel economy, what difference can really be expected in normal day-to-day driving.

Can't help you there in the fuel economy, After several times trying to get the speedo working in my Ranger with the Toploader 4 speed, I just plain gave it up. I just rely on the tach to keep me out of trouble in the speed dept.
