today i discovered that the 351m that we have in a 86 1 ton is a 4 barrel w/ factory holley. but what really has me curious is the heads. would they be 4v heads? or did ford just plop a 4v intake onto 2v heads? also i was kinda more curious about the carb and what size it is?
That would not be a factory setup. Ford discontinued the 351M/400 in 1982. Ford never made any 4V intakes for the 351M/400. Most likely what you have is a 460. You can find more info re your engine in the 460 engine forum.
count your valve cover bolts that will tell you which engine you have, but torque1st, is correct you wouldn't have a 4v 351m or even a 351m at all factory anyway.
if you have 6 bolts 302 or 351w, 8 bolts = 351c 351m/400; 7 bolts 429/460
but I definatly agree it is probably a 460
dang! 351w! i went out and checked again and actually looked at the engine.it has the small valve covers and small block style exaust manifolds. just shows what 9 years of a vehicle in storage will do! but why a small block in a 1 ton?
Some Fords were not created equal. I would have bet against a 351Wheezer in a 1 ton also. I guess if you wanted a small V8 that would have been the only option. I think a 300-6 probably had higher ratings in that truck tho. The 300-6 had higher tow ratings etc than the 351W in my 85.
on the manual that i have. the 4bbl 351 wasn't very far behind as far as horsepower goes (torque was another story though, probably why it has 4.10's) but mt dad did say that even with a lod on it, it never really grunted. its only problem, until the rod let go, was that it would blow 6-7 foot flames when it backfired!
