I should have guessed I purchased the wrong air filter system when the tech. @ FORD told me "That is the worst thing you can do to your truck" The obvious is the fact that you are sucking in "hotter" air from the engine compartment and the intercooler now is trying to cool that air down, that will never get as cool as the air it sucks in from the front. Anyway....... After researching I purchased what I should have purchased in the first place.... The AFE PRO GUARD 7. It is a sealed unit that replaces the stock cannister and has a high flow filter. I had the AIRAID on for 1500 miles of moderate sreet/highway driving. No OFFROAD time at all....... TO MY AMAZEMENT...... I removed the AIRAID SYSTEM AND FOUND FINE DIRT ALL THE WAY TO THE TURBO!!!!! I almost "blanked" my pants. Now before you guys start saying it had a leak, it wasn't put on right. Don't even. It was on as good as it could have been installed. I don't know what to do with it now. I am out $280.00 and fell like calling AIRAID personally to get some answers. What do you guys think I can do about this???????? I assumed that 4Wheel Kookes Warehouse won't take it back.
What do they use for a filter is it a k+n or like it cause those don't work good on a diesel. Dirt gets by them unless they are real dirty then they filter better...
Humm, good to know. As for K&N...they must have finally figured it out, cause they now offer the following:
The K&N PreCharger filter wrap is a specially designed to extend the service interval of your K&N Filtercharger filter when used in very dusty conditions. They are made from durable polyester material containing a uniform weave. The PreCharger will stop small dirt particles with minimal restriction to the airflow of the filter.
The AFE uses a 7 stage filter. It sounds too technical for me. The problem with the AIRAID is that the only thing keeping dust/dirt out of the box was a cheesy weatherstripping that supposedley sealed when you close the hood (it still used the front air dam going through the core support). It looks cool is about all I can say for the AIRAID. It does not work. The box had ALOT OF DIRT surrounding the filter. In a diesels case you are correct, the dirtier the better, but why expose it to more dirt than necessary??? In the grille there is a diverter that keeps contaminents out of the box. The stock/AFE setup sucks in cooler air from the front of the truck opposed to the AIRAID that is ALWAYS sucking hot engine compartment air. I still am p*ssed off at the product that they put out. Oh well, live and learn I always say.
well, i have had an airaid on for about 45,000 miles. i have no dust or dirt in the intake tube what so ever(i check it every time i service the filter, about twice a year). the truck has about 52,000 miles on it and will still pull around 30psi boost.
the afe 7 layer filter does look like a better filter than what comes in the airaid(i might have to get one of those) but the housing looks exactly the same.
I remember back in 84 I was working for GM and I was in my stall doing what ever and this god awfull noise two bays down got my attention. This diesel mech had started an engine and it went full open, you wanna see guys run. I was the only guy left in the shop. I ran over and put a rag on the intake to slow the engine down so it wouldn't blow as it was brand new. The suction that thing had was unbelievable. A couple of other guys came in and added to the rag pile but we couldn't stop it, the black smoke filled the shop, finally the mech came back and pulled a wire to kill it, We kept it from blowing but there was know way that engine was gonna stop without killing the injector pump. The mechanic hadn't hooked up the exhaust yet so it was a real scare...
Wlihntr,
I am talikng about the AIRAID "cold air" intake. The AFE I bought after the fact replaces the OEM cannister with an all metal cannister and serviceable filter. It is not open at all under the hood. It sucks air in like the OEM model. Is this the same one you have? If I am not mistaken, AIRAID is open on top and seals with the hood....right?????? Let me know hat you are talking about.

yea, mine is the one that is open on the top and has that rubber door seal like thing around it that presses against the hood. i did take the old bottom half out and cut it so it was open to the fender well and did the zoodad mod on it to get as much cold air into it as possible. i also wraped the box in some aliumized heat insulation wrap to keep out radiant heat from the engine compartment.
give me a second and i will post a link to the AFE i just saw...click HERE
