can anyone give me a few cars and trucks that came with a 460 and years. i am going to search in some local salvage yards and this info will be very helpful. thanks in advance.
thanks for the info. but i thought i have read that these years of engines were limited in power due to emission laws and such. i was thinking i needed an engine from an earlier period for more hp and torque without having to do any mods. ???? oh wait, i think i get it now matt, they did'nt start the 460 till 68 or at least one that will bolt to my c6. and then they were in the cars. when they started putting them in trucks it was only 4x2's till the 80's at which point they finally put them in the 4x4's. is this close to being the correct scenerio and if so i did learn this on FTE.

Reason: my light bulb came on
Correct, the 460 was innovated in 1968, along with a bucket load of other engines.
Ideally you want a 68-72 engine, with the most desireable being 1970. The only real difference is the cylinder head design. (I know there are more, but they are minor in comparison)
Ford Racing (FRPP) makes aluminum cobra jet and super cobra jet cylinder heads for the 460, they also make forged cranks, sportsman blocks, pro-mod, pro-stock, NHRA/IHRA, Circle Track and outlaw class blocks. Its all up to what you want to do.
i just want a stronger motor that will bolt in my current setup without too much hassle or cost. i think the 460 is the best choice for this. if i can find the strongest stock 460 motor than thats even better. hopefully it will make up the power lost in the c6. i'm tired of running 4 low when i should'nt have to. and since i need a 351m for my newly acquired supercab i'll use the one from my 4x4 and put a 460 in its place. thanks matt
i have been doing some web surfing and found some interesting things. matt you are very close with the info you gave. i have found some extra info to add. ford did put 460's in f150 4x4's as early as 75 though it was very rare. and there were two different ones. one being a 460a and the other is a 460j. of these some had the oil dipstick in the timing cover and others were in the oilpan. the ones with oilpan sticks costs about 300$ more. also found 78 mercs had 460's as well as 79 lincs. you may have known all this already and were just trying to simplify things. anyway knowledge is power and maybe this info will help someone.
Just to simplify things, Ford did not put the 460 in any 4x4 truck until 1983. There is a lot of skewed information out there. I know for a fact that 78/9 lincolns only got the 400.
The oilpan one you are talking about is the rear sump 4x4 version. There was also a middle sump Van version, these were extremely rare however.
I'm not trying to say you are wrong, just that I've been in your shoes, and after many posts on FTE, I'd consider this something I know pretty well.
my intention was'nt to start an arguement. i have just been trying to do some research on my own so i dont bother everyone else so much and i found this info. if it is wrong maybe we could sue these places for false info.......lol
Please do ask....I am most definetly not going to argue....
I assure you, you will find a lot of conflicting material, here and around the net. The problem with the net is that nobody will stand up to what they type.
