two questions

a while back i asked a question about my truck having a shake at around 40 mph, and it i were to go any faster or slower than that, the shake goes away. someone told me to check the u-joints, and i did. everything was fine. , my tires are also balanced as well, so now what should i be checking into, i have no ideas on what else it could be!!

my second question is this, i will explain. the other day i was driving and decided to step on the gas for a little bit, cause im sure all of you like that turbo feelin too!!, anyways when i would step on it my truck would blow out some black smoke, i think this is ok, but when i would tromp on the gas and hold it for maybe 3-5 seconds and then chop off the gas, this huge, black, puff of smoke would come out of the pipe, i mean i couldnt see the guy behind me, so i am wondering if this is normal, or if i have a problem arising on my hands? thanks for any info you guys give!

I'd guess that your vibration is from the carrier bearing. My truck had a vibration at a certain speed that would go away if you drove faster. My short term solution was to merely drive very fast, but have since decided that shimming the carrier bearing is probably a lot safer and wiser. For me, a 1" shim was perfect.
I haven't got a clue about the smoke on deceleration. I've never noticed if mine does it, so I don't know.

thanks for the info quadzilla, but i am not sure what a carrier bearing is, is it the steady bearing you are talking about and just call it the carrier bearing or am i way off? what do you mean by shimming, could you explain what you have to do.

thanks

big red, the carrier bearing is the stationary bearing between the 2 drive shafts and mounted to the frame of the truck. The driveshafts must have angles on them to operate properly. try looking here for an explanation ... www.bgsoflex.com/dshaft.html . If that doesnt come up try a search on driveshaft and try the many links there.
the smoke on the lift is not known to me either, unless the ecm is sensing an over load of fuel pressure ... does the truck lunge forward during this or is it slowing down?
Hope i helped a little.

mybigredford-
bilder12 gave the definition of the carrier bearing. On my truck, I put a 1" shim in mine to bring the two sections of the driveshaft into a straight line. The procedure is pretty straight forward. You remove the two bolts holding it in place with a 9/16" socket, insert the shim, and reattach with longer bolts. I made my shim out of some 1" square tubing, and drilled holes for the bolts to pass through.
I hope this helps.

thanks for the help quadzilla/bilder12. i might try that shim and see if it helps, i can always change it back it the same problem is there. Bilder12, when i chop the throttle the truck doesnt lunge at all, it just goes the same speed and then of course slows down cause the gas isnt on. my truck hasnt done this to me since it happened a few days ago (the smoke i mean) i did notice though if i stepped on it hard the smoke would come out, but i i held the gas where it was and then slowly let off and it would shift gears, there would be no smoke.

Start small with the carrier bearing shims. Usually the longer the shaft is the lesser it needs to be moved to correct the angle. If you use bar stock to make the shims start with 1/4" and go up from there as needed.

On the smoke, a puff of black when you get after it is normal, and since it hasn't done the big cloud again it may have just been a fluke, or maybe you just cleaned the tops of the pistons off real well....had it been a while since you had been in it real hard?

cookie88, about a month ago, i went on a trip, about1200 mile in total, the first 600 miles i was unloaded and the last 600 i was pulling a trailer, there were a few big hills, and other than that, i was going around 65-70 mph. whatabout that, would that trip cleaned the pistons, or a month of city driving gum them up again? im going out for a couple of hours today, i will tromp on the gas a few times and see what happens, and report back!!
