94 Explorer Drivetrain clunk
I have a 94 explorer with about 66K miles, with an automatic transmission. I have started to notice a clunk in the drivetrain at low speeds (up to 40 mph)when the engine is downshifting, usually in stop-and-go in-town driving, or when comming to a stop at an intersection. I checked the u-joints, and there does not seem to be any play there. I'm not much of a machanic, so I had a Ford dealer check it out, and they said it is normal "suspension noise" for a 94 Explorer with 66K miles. It only happens when downshifting, so I don't really trust the Ford dealer's diagnosis of "suspension noise". I hope to avoid catastrophic problems (transmission failure) if possible. Anybody have any thoughts what it might be, if not "suspension noise"?

Im not much of a mechanic either but i guarentee its not normal suspension noise. Take it to another shop thats not a dealer, thats all i can recomend for now, because like i said im not much of a mechanic. All i can say is i got the run-around from the dealers too about this stuff. My opinion is they said that cause it wouldn't profit them to fix it themselves.
