95 Explorer Cam Sensor

Hello!

I have a 95 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 liter pushrod V-6. I just recently started getting a check engine light, so I purchased a code reader. Upon scanning the codes, I learned that I had bad O2 sensors and a bad CID sensor. I replaced the O2 sensors and ran the scanner again. The O2 sensor code is gone, however, the CID sensor code remains along with the check engine light. I've come to decide that I need to replace the CID sensor. However, I've been told (by the local ford dealer) that the 95's have a one-piece unit, in which you cannot simply remove the sensor. The dealer told me that I have to remove the entire drive/sensor assembly... and that he would be quite happy to sell me a new one for a mere $370.00!!! I'm wondering if all this sounds accurate. Also, I inspected my sensor unit pretty closely, there ARE two screws on top, which suggest to me that the sensor might just come off. (I've yet to get an opportunity to get those screws out to find out). Thanks for any help you can offer!!!

Steve

If you do take it off and find that the sensor is seperate, look at it closely for a Ford part number. Ford is good about marking their parts with their numbers. Take that number down to the parts department and get just the sensor.

There are 2 screws on top, but Ford only sells the sensor & drive assembly.

$370 is not a bad price! Expressautoparts.com gets $347 for an aftermarket (Standard brand) unit.

I believe that I paid about $370 for the cam sensor on my '95 Explorer XLT as well.

Same problem with my 95 Explorer. Code reader suggests CID circuit. My problem? I can't even FIND the damn cam sensor. I thought it was supposed to be on top of the engine between the heads, but I cn't find it. Do I need to remove the plenum to see it?
