Hey, there - I just picked up a cheap 84 F250 w/ a 460 and I'm trying to get to know the engine a bit. Two questions for the forum:
1. I see an inline slider switch thing on the hose running from the PCV valve. I can't tell if it's stock or not, having no experience with the engine. Is it a cutoff switch or something I might need to adjust or should I just ignore it? It's currently all the way to the right and the truck runs fine, so I don't mind leaving it. More just curious. Any ideas what this is?
2. My oil filler cap doesn't snug down very well onto the valve cover. I can't tell if the bottom metal clip on it is bent out of shape or if they're just supposed to be a little loose (my only experience is with the push-on type on an old mustang). Also: should there be any sort of gasket between the cap and valve cover or no?
Anyway, thanks for any insight. This seems like an invaluable board for me to visit and pester you fine folks. heh.
not sure about the slider deal you are asking about, but the oil cap should have a gasket under it if it is missing then it would be loose, either go to a wrecking yard, and snag one off of an old engine probably doesn't even matter what or buy a new cap they should come with it.
Could that "slider thingy" be a bi-metal air bleed? I have seen them on Ford products in the past. I believe they open when the engine temp get a little high. Brings up the idle speed to help cool thing down.
well, I called it a "slider" because it is not a strict "on" or "off" switch - just slides from left to right. but it IS some sort of switch. maybe i'll take a picture of it and post it. I don't think it affects anything, but now I'm just curious.
thanks for the other comments. I went ahead and ordered a replacement oil cap from NAPA. Hopefully it'll have a gasket.
