94 Explorer Tranny Shifting

The auto trans in my 94 XLT 4WD (82,000 Miles) started shifting badly today. It won't upshift on its own. It gets to about 4000 RPM with no indication that it will upshift, so I back off of the throttle and it jumps up into the next gear. I had the ATF and filter changed today (it had 50,000 miles on it). There was no change. I found a posting that referenced a governor inside of the output tailshaft housing . It said that the governor may get gummed up with old ATF and won't move. It is an easy clean up job after the tailshaft is off. Before I have the transfer case removed and the tailshaft housing removed to get to the governor, I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and fixed it this way. I'm supposed to have it at the mechanic early on Friday, so I'm searching for fast answers before the mechanic tears into it. Thanks for your help.
