Do a search, and you will find a lot of discusion on the K&N air filter. Personally, the only thing I think they will do is lighten your wallet!!!! Watch out for "independent tests", a
lot of these tests are paid for by K&N.
You can check this URL, it is an independent test!!
I have a K&N in my car and i did notice a slight increase but nothing to talk about. I look at it as a reusable filter and it should save you money in the long run. I will most likly put one in my truck too.
i got a bmw e34 too. always use good oem filters. the k&n makes your engine sound better but it does let in a bunch of dirt. so your not saving money by increased oil changes and engine damage. i would only get a fipk or something similar if i got a lot of work done on the car and need everything to be super efficient but then it would be a track car and probably wouldn't last too long anyways.
ps the guys who did the testing are pretty smart guys. they make a lot of good products.
Ive been reading alot about filters, High flow filters, and intakes today... The general consensus on the internet is that they are garbage. They only increase horsepower under certain conditions.
---I alwasy wondered why getting more air into the engine would help it if the engine is not a forced induction engine. From what I have read, it doesnt.
--The same goes with exhaust. If you put you hand behind the tailpipe on a car, there really isnt that much air coming out, even when you rev it up. So why owuld putting a "Free flowing" exhaust on it even help. My personally dont think it will help unless, again, you have a forced induction system that needs the exhaust freed up.
--From what I can gather, all this free flow "hoop-laa" you always read about doesnt apply to the average engine. (Just my personal opinion)
Stock Replacement at Autozone: 16.99, replace every 5000
Fram Air Hog: 47.99, never replace
50,000 miles later:
Stock costs: 169.99
Fram: 57.98, includes original filter and cleaning kit

While I don't plan on replacing my air filter every 5k miles, nor do I know anyone who does, your point is made. My experience is that the OE type filter will last 15-20k miles unless you're consistently driving in dusty conditions. Under that scenario, the equation would be more like this
50,000 miles later:
Stock Costs: 3 x $17 = $51 (the first filter came with the truck)
Fram: 57.98
For purposes of the post, I'll ignore the question of filtering capability.
I happen to like Green Filters. Same concept as K&N, but cheaper and just as high quality. I have one in my 04 F-150, and while I didn't notice any power gain, I'm sure it can't hurt and it is reusable.
They appear to be highly similar designs. You will get lots of different opinions about the effectiveness and supposed benefits of this type of filter.
