There has been chat recently about the valvetrain noise the 300's seem to be born with, and a few people mentioning they found things a bit loose and a good tightening did help out.
Was at the boneyard today pulling a 3.50 punkin' for the van and decided to grab a spare valve cover to shave the top off of for when rocker arm replacement time rolls around [use as an oil dam while adjusting the rockers].
Wound up pulling the covers off 2 different 300's and decided to "survey" the valvetrain condition. Valves in both motors seemed pretty loose, and both had at least two valves WAY out of adjustment. One was so far off there was at least an 1/8" gap between the pushrod and rocker. Yikes.
Anyone have a service manual noting the mileage interval recommended between valve adjustments?
My '77 300 had a rocker fall off the stud while I was cruising. Rocker nuts were always backing off. The service manual a year or two later had a note about Ford having added "positive stop rocker studs" or something to that effect. Never had the problem on my '84 or '95 and never adjusted the valves.
