tempering metal

i have a 1980 f-250 lwb and have found a really good deal on an '85 stepside box. since i have always liked the look of a stepside. i have decided to shorten the frame instead of swapping like many suggest for two reasons, first of all i am on a limited buget a cutting the frame would be cheaper than finding a swb frame and i don't have to swap everything i have already done work to like the cab, engine and transmission. anyway i know how i am going to cut it and how im going to back it and box it but what i would like to know is how and if i can temper, make the metal surrounding the weld stronger so that i know it is secure and strong. any and all info will be greatly appreciated

Typically the weld are becomes weaker than the surrounding metal from the heat generated. I would cut a V where you will join the two halves so they fit together. This will provide more area for strength as opposed to a straight vertical cut. I dont see how you could temper it. excessive heat will damage the frame more than its worth IMO.

I would take a piece of steel plate and cut it to fit inside the frame, drill some holes and bolt the plate to the frame. If the welds crack, the bolts might hold until you can fix it.
You can also box the frame where it's welded to make it stronger.
