A/C blower

I had posted some time back about the A/C blower in my 1992 not moving as much air as it used to.

Well today when I turned on the A/C all I got was low, the selector was on high and when I moved it through different positions it would slow down and speed up, but it is BARELY moving any air, just about what it would normaly move on the lowest setting. The blower motor sounds rough too!

I ordered a replacement blower from Advance for $54.05 next day... should be nice and cold again tomorrow!!! I hope so, it is too hot down here in South Carolina for the Blower to just quit like that, it's been in the high 90's to low 100's around here lately. I am going to clean the evap. coil while I have the blower out tommorow.

Since the blower motor sounds rough too I would suspect that the fan is plugged. I've seen nests, rags etc in them.

FYI in case it applies. The gizmo that actually controls fan speed is a multi-prong resistor plug that attaches to the firewall above the blower. Mine had developed rust inside the female end and it caused loss of contact between the pins and their seats. A bit of cleaning eased the problem, but I ended up replacing the resistor anyway, (not real expensive).
As racerguy says, it's quite possible your airway could be plugged. To find out, you'll have to remove the blower. Also, make sure the air inlet under the dash is not plugged up by paper, debris, etc. Sometimes it'll suck up stuff from your floor that stays against the filter. It's not visible from a sitting position, get down on the floor and look up at it.

It was the blower motor that was bad. It was likely original to the van. The brushes were shot, noticed that the radio reception with the fan on was lousy when it finally started failing. Now it is back to normal again.

A little time with the water hose and the handy shop-vac thoroughly cleaned out the evaporator coil and now the A/C is colder than it has been since we got the van. Blows a lot more air too! Got to get some self adhesive weather strip to put around the new blower motor to seal it up, and dampen the vibration of the blower a little.

Easy job, except having to work around the hard line to the accumulator... that was fun. Also had to remove the air cleaner to get to one of the screws, and allow enough room to work.
