I just bought a 76 f100 2wheel driver with a 360. Its got a pretty decent body and thats hard to find in canada. I wanna build a half decent mud truck and use this for my body. Im sure its alot easier to just find a 4x4 frame and stick my body on top but what should I be looking for? I assume I can only use a 70-79 body cause the new ones are narrower. Should I look for a 3/4 ton because I want someone with the front leaf springs so I can lift it easier. Should I look for f100? 150? 250? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks
the coil spring front end is easy to lift and it gives you more flex and better ride than leaf springs....jmho. a 3/4 ton will have a heavier more sturdy frame and it will have the one ton rearend. i guess it depends on what you plan on doing with the truck. i take my 78 1/2 ton anywhere i wanna go and have only busted the u-joints in the front end and that was from poor maintenance. no other problems to my recolection.
Well budget is also an issue too. I figure with leaf springs all around I can just drop the shackles and add a few springs for a nice lift. Are all 250's 3/4ton or what is the difference?
all 250's are 3/4 ton as far as i know. they have a one ton rear and half ton front with 8 lug rotors. they average 1 ton and half ton to get 3/4 ton. i put 6" highlift coils on the front of my truck for about 100$
A friend of mine as a 79 3/4 ton and its got the leaf spring front end. You just said 3/4 tons had a 1/2ton front end didnt you? So wouldnt that mean it should have coil spring front? Im confused.
