Automatic Transmission

Have a 1993 Explorer, need to know what other transmission I can use to swap this out. NON- 4wheel, was told I may be able to use trans from Ranger or Bronco II. Thanks Ron

You can use one from same era Ranger or late version Bronco II. The tranny you have in there is an A4LD, available on both aforementioned vehicles.

If you find a Ranger, make sure it's a v-6 and not the 2.3L four. Even though both engines used the A4LD, the v-6 was stronger internally (used more discs in the clutch packs IIRC).

Any A4LD from '85 to '94 will "bolt" up. An '86 and '87 A4LD will be lacking the wiring for the 3-4 control solenoid (3-4 shift on these years was vacuum controlled) which will irritate the computer from later models. The 4.0 A4LD is also stronger internally than the earlier 2.9 L A4LD's.
