Hello, i just broke my drivers side roll down window on my 1986 f-250 and was wondering how hard they are to change?? It is just a custom so the door panels come off easy. I would appreciate if anyone that has done this before would please tell me any tricks or tips there is to changing them?? Thanks.
I replaced a side window in a Ford E-150, it wasn't really hard but was'nt easy either, after all the window mounting hardware is disconnected, and its removed, when you have the old window out, make sure its sealed at the bottom on the rail track, or it'll bounce up an down if you have the window partly opened when you hit a pothole in the road or bumpy roads make it rattle. After you seal it on the bootom rail, before you put it in from the top (remove the rubber trim on the window ledge, to help make it easier to insert, have a helper hold it while you mount the bolts to the door skin, if no helper...you'll need one. mount the bolts carefully tighting it as you go to adjust the track along the window ledge, rolling it up to make for adjustments.
I just removed my windows (to tint them) and ran into the same problem. I thought it would be tricky to do so I was a bit worried when I started the project. However, once you have the door panel off, it really isn't very hard. Follow locknkey's instructions and you will do fine. Good luck!
To me the slowest part is removing/replacing the door panel. On pickups there are two screws on the front side of the door frame that hold the vent assembly. Remove those and the 11mm (or 7/16"s) bolt just above the window crank. You'll need to peel the weatherstripping out of the vent frame. Due to the age of your truck this is likely brittle and may break up. You can rob the strip out of a newer junkyard truck (up to 96) and replace it while you're in there. Pull the vent assembly inwards and up. You'll have to twist it a bit to clear a bracket but it should wiggle right on out. If you bought a used replacement glass, then it will have the track already on it. Slide the down into the door and on to the regulator's "roller". And put everything back together in reverse order. I usually spray some silicone lube on the backside of the weatherstrip to help slide it back into the vent glass assembly's run. There is no real adjustment, but you can move the 11mm bolt back and forth a smidge.
My son in law and I just did this procedure to re-weld a broken bracket on the vent frame. In the dark, with a flashlight, we did it in less than 30 minutes. Including the welding and the fact that we stupidly welded the bracket on backwards and had to pull it all out to redo it.
BTW, an "E-150" is a van. Van windows are not serviced in the same way as trucks and are actually quite a lot more difficult.
Exactly the same way as above on all 80-96 F-Series trucks. If you mean to replace just the rubber "channel" that goes all the way around the door glass, you don't really have to take anything apart. Just pull the old stuff out and carefully feed the new in. Again silicone lube is helpful. You'll likely want to roll the window halfway up and down to help feed the seal into the track. Even if you pull the vent and glass out first, you still can't put the front part in until the glass and vent are back in. See above.
If you mean the beltline seal, the inner on attaches to the door panel. Take the door panel to replace it. The outer can be replaced without removing the glass, but I recommend taking it out. You'll be prying around right next to it and tempered glass can be more sensitive to prying than it is a direct hammer blow.
