Hi, I'm chris .. yep
nice to meet you.

lol, anywho.

I just bought an 88 B2 2.9L auto.
The girl who owned it before me took very bad care of it.
So on the way home the lifters start making this awful clicking sound.
Sounds like a friggin diesel, honestly.

I pulled the valve covers and its very clean in there.
No foam, no gunk, really clean. I can see the oil dripping down the head when I do a running inspection.

I splashed a bit of oil on the rockers, not lifters, and it didnt quiet it down any.
I'm scared to try the oil additives/cleaners for fear of my engine dying because of gunk blockage.

I changed the oil. sae10 w30 i believe ?
Didnt help, I dont have much money at all. none actually.
Is there anything I can try to get them to quiet down a bit untill I can get some money saved up ?

I'm willing to try anything other than a rebuild.

Many thanks!
chris.

Slap some 2.8 solid lifters in there, thatll stop the noise for sure.

other than the last three post b4 this one. this thread is 2 years old. the 2.9 lifters tick, and make noise. its a defect in the design, poor oil travel. the lifters tend to get under oiled a bit and tic. i use lucas on every oil change. quiets them up pretty good. i wouldnt worry bout it too much unless it sounds like its beating down the door. i have had 1 2.9 go thru 4 trucks(where the engine out last the body/frame) with no rebuild/tear downs between just a drop and swap deal, and still runs fine, the current owner is quite happy with.

I had an early 80's era Mercury Capri when I was a kid that had a simmilar problem. The cam lobes were so worn out that when ever I took a corner to fast (wich was all the time) the rockers would move and start making as terrible clikking racket. There were even a few times that I lost a rocker but they were so worn that I could just pull the valve cover and withe the help of a tire iron wedge the rocker back into place. Being a teenager I didnt have money for new cams, rockers, or anything else that the car needed) so I got realy good at pulling realighning the rockers whenever the racket got realy bad.

Same Here ...

Changed the oil too to the 20-50 w/a high mileage filter and that awful ticking disappeared. Would recommend letting the engine "warm up" w/20-50 before racing around in the wintertime.

Lucas oil&lube additive. you can pick it up at advance auto. napa, or autozone. it comes in a white bottle and has LUCAS in red letters. they made other products too. so be sure to read the label.

Mine does too..

I have an 86 B2 and it make a clicking sounds and our conclusion is that its a lifter but if i let mine warm up for about ten minutes, it seems to go away, does yours? Do you know if the lifters are adjustable at all?

Thanks,
Tori

Lifters ticking during warm-up is very common for the 2.9's and nothing to worry about. Both of mine have done it as far back as I can remember. Welcome to the forum.

It does come back sometimes when driving, i was going to try thicker oil in it to see if that helped.

If I remember right it's an issue of the path the oil takes to the top of the engine being too restrictive, so I would guess a thicker oil might actually exacerbate the problem. Just do some searching though. There's a lot of good information out there on the subject.

Hydrolic lifters are not adjustable, but they're easy to change, you can use a wooden dowel to listen and determine which lifter is sticking, buy a set of gaskets and swap out any/all bad lifters in an afternoon, you dont need to rebuild the whole engine over a sticky lifter.
