I have a 90 Ranger with the 2.3 engine and 147,000 miles on it- got the thing fixed up pretty well over the past month and today I started working on the air conditioning- it looks like the previous AC belt fell apart in there ( pieces of it were everywhere) so I put a new belt on the compressor and crossed my fingers- nothing but hot air when I turned the ac on- I do believe the compressor works though because everytime I turned it on I could feel and hear the engine srain a little.
My question is this: can I just recharge this and it will be fixed? I have an old can of R-12 sitting in the garage - or should I buy one of those kits at autozone to convert it to 134a? I dont know the history of the ac system in this truck- it looks like someone just gave up on it when the belt broke.
Thats a judgement call, the R12 is alot more expensive than the 134A, and if you have a leak, then you just wasted alot of money if it leaks out.on the other hand, you might put the can you have in and see if it gets cool at all, although 1 can probably wont be enough to charge it all the way.In the long run your better off converting to 134A because you'll be adding a can every year or so.
