Anyone recommend a certain brand or place to get one? NAPA is the least expensive at $240. Anyone use those adapters that go on a regular floor jack? I've got a 2 1/4 ton floor jack, but don't know if it will work. All advice is appreciated. I won't rent one 'cause the only rental place that has one charges just as much as a new one costs to buy.
You didn't say if the was hydraulic, but at that price, I doubt it.
If you are going to use it on a professional basis, I strongly recommend a hydraulic unit, I have never seen a mechanicle unit that I would want to trust supporting (and transporting) 200 to 500 lbs of transmission with me under it. most mechanicles are balancing acts and therefore unsafe.
My friend and I used the adapter for the floor jack, and it worked well. Just make sure that the one you get has the fine adjustment bolts on two axes, not just one. Check out Northern tools, and look at the picture. If you're only going to use it occasionally, the money you save will be worth it. Although those air powered ones would be cool to have(and play with)!
I made my own. I looked at my sizzors jack and then duplicated about 4 times larger. I put castors on it. It will hold a short block. I could take a pic for you.
