Just wanted to some insight or some input on the the best way to derust my '56 frame. I tried sandblasting but I think it will take me about 10 days to do! I was going to have it dipped but the place I wanted to take it to could not fit my frame in the dip tank.
Any suggestions?
Hints?
Experiences?
Also does anyone know of any dipping places in the Greater Detroit Area?
Hm.. I'm about 2/3 of the way thru sandblasting my 55 frame. Too hot here in Texas this week.
I did to the cab mounts the first night. Then to a foot or so behind the mid cross over the second night. 40lb Harbor Freight pressurized blaster, 150 lbs of home depot sand, 60 gal, single stage compressor from Lowes.
I have since sprayed the blasgted part with Zero Rust pre-step to stop additional rusting in the meantime. They have a concentration level that is supposed to help loosen and neutralize rust, making it easier to brush off.
Hey guy's, have you looked around for a sandblaster? A guy here does frames for $70 if you catch him with the equipment running. Frames are easy for the pros. as they can hit with as much psi as possible unlike sheetmetal. Search around, took me two places to find a guy. Even if it's $200, it sure beats blasting for ten days, and your compressor may last ahwile longer. Plus 150 lbs of sand is what like $50? If not, have you thought of Por-15 paint(paint over rust)? Works well and is extremely tough. -4speed
150 lbs of sand is $7.50 ($2.50 a bag) at Home Depot. I have lots to do, not just the frame. Local shops want $800 to do the cab, doors and hood.. I'll stand there and hold the gun for a while at that price. The frame is easy in comparison to the cab.
I'm about 4 hours in on the frame. 2 - 2 hour sessions, and I have 2 hours (2 - 1 hour sessions) on the back of the cab, door edge to door edge, bottom to rear window ledge. That counts cleanup and resift the sand for next session.
My Shopvac picks up 50lbs of sand, and the blaster holds that much too.
So, I fill, blast, fill, blast, fill, blast, vacuum, sift, vacuum, sift and one more time.
The fellow that 4speed mentioned is who just did my other 56 bed and fenders . It cost me $80.00 inside and out! It took me all of about an hour of my time (time to deliver the bed and to pick it up) Now its a done deal and I didnt even have to get any grit in my mouth!
i've just had a few frames done by the local powder coaters, $110.00 for each frame and any loose brackets and x members. what never seems to stop suprising me is how a frame looks OK until blasted then u find the cracks, bends, wear marks on the top of the frame from those rear cab mounts etc etc etc, not all places are dear, cash works wonders!!!
