I have a 01 F-250 V-8. Do a lotta highway driving and sometimes pull a lowboy trailer. Off-road is mostly in sand and occasionally in mud. Love the truck, no problems. When gas got real expensive lately, I put in a K+N filter. Took about 2 minutes to install and noticed a very small (about .25) increase in MPG. So I added a Gibson low restriction exhaust from the headers back. Drives like a different truck. Gibson tech support claims they add about 35 lbs./torque and 20-25 HP. I really see and feel it from about 800 RPM to about 1700. The shift points are complety different, the truck does not downshift as much especially going up hills. More acceleration as well. But I'm not seeing the MPG gains I expected. I assumed the chip would need some time to deal with the increased airflow, buit after 500 miles, nothing. I also changed my driving habits, tromped the gas a few times, took long highway drives, still no increase in mileage. Should I reprogram the chip ? Thanks for any ideas.
glad to hear you liked the power gains from the exhaust ... thinking about doing it myself. you installed headers as well? gains in the low range like your stating sound like the spot where just a little more kick would be real nice. If your working the truck and using that extra power, then it might not see the mpg gains your expecting? maybe you need to get an aftermarket programmer to try to best utilize this increased flow? one more question, did you just put the drop in filter in, or did u get the entire k&n intake?
No headers, but from there back is new. You will really feel the torque. When I'm towing or driving in the sand I don't expect good mileage but highway driving, cruise control set at 68-72 MPH the Tach shows 2000-2100 RPM which is where I expected to see the Mileage increase. It's very tempting to put your foot in it say during an expressway merge and it very much feels like a different truck with a whole bunch more acceleration. I guess I'll try to get a programmer. For the K+N I just installed the filter.
cool, glad to hear you got that nice of a gain from just the filter. i was going to get the whole kit, but have heard from many filter alone is most of the gain. did u modify the housing at all? That is odd that you didnt get more gain from the whole exaust. Anyone else have any ideas on that?
