ignorance isn't always bliss...

first let me say that i love this site. i have learned so much from it in just a week. i wish i had known about this site 2years ago. my 78 4x4 stepside needed its "351m" rebuilt something terrible. so i tore it all down had the block reworked(had to bore it .40 over), took the crank to a local shop and traded for one they had ready, bought new pistons and everything. except rods i kept them. i put it all together and it has ran like a dream ever since. here is the kicker.....knowing what i know now from info on this site i realize i may have made a big mistake. i think i turned a 400 into a 351!!!!! i never checked the old pistons to see what they were. i just traded the crank without checking it. when i put the crank in the motor the rod bearings would'nt work so i went back to the crank shop and discovered i had 400 rods. i just got bearings to fit and never thought that i may have traded in a 400 crank. it is too late now so that makes me sick in my stomach to know how ignorant i was then and how much power i lost because of it. you can bet i wont make the same mistake again. thanks FTE users!!!

The 351M and 400 use the same connecting rods (and bearings). The bearings that didn't fit might have been for a 351W, or something else.

bubbaf250,i guess that is a possibility but i thought the crank was different for a 400. maybe it is just the HB that is different. still, if i had known what i know now i would have made it a 400.
