I was thinking, maybe if I went to a truck junkyard and grabbed some horns from like a bigrig cab or something, then made the rest of the system. do i NEED a compressor, or can i use one of those 5 gallon portable air tanks, and just keep that pressurized from my big compressor at home? how much air do the horns use?
You could use the air tank , but you may be out air when you really need that air horn ! On demand compressors are not that expensive ( check out JC Whitney ) maybe $35. or $40. You would need a compressor and air tank or some type selinoid ( spelling ? ) if you go with the on demand type of compressor to operate the horns with a lanard like the big trucks , most air horn kits sold for four wheelers use a horn button or wire to the stock horn so they sound when you hit the horn in the steering wheel . If you lay on the horns for any length of time they can use a lot of air . If you like that big truck sound get the longest trumpets you can , the longer the horn the deeper the sound !
if you have the option, get stainless trumpets from a marine supply. they have the option of either air or electric. im not sure on what sound quality you will get but ive seen them for like $65 for a set
