I have twin tanks on my truck, both original i think, and I have noticed that the rear tank leaks gas out of the gas cap area. I never use my rear tank, as I found out it doesn't work. I did however fill it up before I realised this. It seems to me like gas is slowly flowing into the rear tank somehow, as it keeps overflowing...anyone have any ideas what may cause this? Thanks
I have the same problem with my '89 except mine goes from the rear tank to the front tank, both tanks work but the gauge only works for the rear tank. I think the fuel tank switching valve may be our problem but not sure about my gauge problem. I run with the front tank and then the rear so I don't have overfilling problem that you have.
Check with the Ford dealer.... there is a factory recall on this. What happens is the tank return line is dumping gas into the tank your not using. The tank switching valve and possivly the fuel pump in one tank is defective. Since it is a safety issue, I don't know if there is a limitation on time or milage.
I just bought the switching valve today from ford and will put it on soon. I hope that solves the problem but I will let you all know either way! Thanks!
I replaced the switching valve today and you can hear it switch over, but the rear tank still doesn't work. I can drive for about an 1/8 of a mile and then it starts to cough and sputter...I think the pump in the rear tank may be gone but I'll just replace the whole damn tank.
