i just bought a 99 F150 sc 4x4 auto 5.4 and it doesnt feel like it has the power it suppose to have .it has 62k and 3.55 gears.when i mash the throttle shouldnt it like spin the 16in tires alittle?
Is the maintenance up to date? Do you have the check engine light on? I can spin the tires without trying. The only mods I have are an airraid intake, throtle body spacer and borla muffler. I would suspect a dirty fuel filter or air filter? Does it have any missing or rough idle?
It runs really smooth,it has a K&N (CLEAN) filter. the plugs i think havent been changed. i have them in the truck i havent had time to change them. the previous owner bought it, when it had 32k and he never changed the plugs. it now has 62k with no eng light .wouldnt it run like crap if it was dirty??
Maybe a dirty MAF sensor, if the K&N was over oiled it could foul up the MAF.
I just realized you have a 4x4, that is a heavier truck, but you should have plenty of power with the 5.4. I would change the fuel filter if your not sure if its been done, and think about a tranny service (flush and filter). Hope that helps
I'm gonna service the trans ,change the plugs, replace fuel filter,it wouldnt hurt it anyway. How much improvent did you see with the airraid and exhaust triton_2002 ??
Mods are in my gallery. (Click over my username and the options pop up for the gallery) I don't have any hard numbers as far a improvements since the mods and I did them all at once so can't say which made the most difference. I'm happy with it, especially the Borla muffler. Its nice and quiet at idle and under smooth acceleration, but if you step on it, it has a deep raspy growl, not too loud, just enough to let em hear you comming. You'll get alot of different opinions as far as the reusable air filters vs. paper filters and the use of throttle body spacers, so read up and decide for yourselves. Good luck with mods.
Well i just did the plugs.Good thing i did them i guess the previous owner got scared and only did a few plugs infront.i also flushed out the tranny the fluid was very dirty.it also looks like some one replaced the passenger side rear coil once before.the good thing is i took it for a ride afterwards and i smoked the tires all theway up the street, something it never did before since i got it 2 weeks ago .i'm gonna install the Gibson side swept exhaust next month and Airraid intake pipe i hope it goes well next sat when i got to the track with it towing my car. Thanks for the help fellas
OK...Just how much power should my F150 have? I have the Triton 4.6. Just for giggles, I tried to power brake when I first got it and nothing. It gets up and goes pretty good for the small V8, but just doesn't seem to thave the brute power he is describing above. Or am I just wishing for alot out of a small engine?
4.6 is rated at 231 HP @ 4750 RPM / 293 TQ @ 3500 RPM
5.4 is rated at 260 HP@ 4500 RPM / 350 TQ @ 2500 RPM
(Got the info from the SPECS link at the top right of the FTE website)
As you can see, the big difference is the torque. But you probably just didn't try hard enough on that powerbrake.
Well i just finish getting back from towing my nephews toyota junk runner from his job.he blew his engine.but to make a long story short this truck tows better than anything i ever had.it was a half hour drive and the fuel guage didnt move .it never even broke a sweat towing that heavy pig .It really has ***** i'm a true believer of 5.4 .
HMMMM Lets see...brake all down, foot to floor on the throttle.....did I miss anything?
Now don't get me wrong, I don't do this all the time. I checked out a Stang a couple of months ago and thought just for ***** and giggles, can the truck do it. Now the truck does run great, but it seems like it has some sort of power band....it will accellerate, then at a certain point, it feels like a sudden extra boost and it really goes. Maybe I just need to go through all the sensors and filters and clean/replace em. Couldn't hurt. I always theought that accelration would be consistent, not a boost when the RPMs get up a bit higher.
