today at work me and my boss are both ford guys. any how we got to wondering if ford made any big diesel motors? i work on cleveland(GM) diesels in tug boats ranging from the 278(v12 1400hp@ 780 rpm) 498( V8 1500+hp) 567(V12 1700 hp)
just wondering if ford made any thing this big?
Ford actually doesn't make any diesels, they license them from international.
Yep, the International T444E is the basis for the 7.3 PSD and the VT365 is the basis for the 6.0 PSD. In the F650/750 you can get the 5.9 Cummins or a Cat. Ford doesn't make any diesels themselves.
They used to make some big ones when they still made tractors but they have since sold the tractor part off. Since then, Ford doesnt make any. But I believe Land Rover makes some smaller ones but nothing near what you are asking about.
Didn't Ford did make a couple diesels, inline 6s, used in the late-80s and early 90s? IIRC, they were a 6.6 (401) and a 7.8 (478). Went in 7000-8000 series trucks. I've seen a few of those trucks, they have a Ford Diesel emblem.
HP isn't the important thing....a diesel engine never puts out much of a HP rating because the redline RPM is so low. HP is just a mathematic calculation of Torque and RPM..since the max RPM is so low, the HP is low.
