2004 Problems

I know everyone has their own thread with different problems they are having, but I haven't seen one for all problems. I figured it would be easier to see who is having what problems with the '04's.

Here is My case.

I have a '04 XLT I have had since May 19th, it has just about 14,000 on it. (I drive alot, everyother weekend I go to my girlsfriend's school 1000mi round trip)
I am seeing the same problems alot of you are seeing; i.e

Lound whine from rear around 55-60mph
Slow turns L-R popping noise (sounds like 4x4)
It needs to think a second or two after I put it in reverse before it goes.
Rough Idle

I know there's more just can't think of any right now.

So I am curious to see everybody's "issues"

Chris

The rear whine seems to be common in V8 models, I just had my entire differential replaced under warranty 300 miles ago, and it is fixed. I presume they have an upgrade part, the sales mgr. told me in advance that every V8 he's had has done it and there's a fix in the works. 3000 miles later the "fix" exists and they did it. Never had mine hesitate going into reverse (unless the shift lever wasn't in the detent fully). The pop you describe sounds like diff related as well, so you should be able to get two things fixed at once.

the whine noise is on most explorers I had mine fixed in May with the updated differential and not a problem since.

I have an 04 xlt and i have a couple of the same problems that u have:

-rough idle
-reverse delay/hard clunk

Regarding the reverse problem, it hasnt happened in 3000 miles (I have 3500 miles on the vehicle now) and the tranny is perfect so im guessing that its just a break-in item (even though it is pretty unusual). I have a rough idle where the vehicle shakes/vibrates when idling. this idle is also accompanied by a rattling noise in the engine compartment (btw can u check and see if u have this same noise? when u open the hood, listen towards the right-rear side of the valve cover). ive taken the vehicle into the dealer for the rough idle and transmission and they said that everything is fine (im trusting them for the time being because the service invoice says that the tech did extensive diagnostic work involving the usual code scan as well as inspecting and road testing many components). Its good to report your problems early though because if the problems lead to failure later on, you can hold the dealer responsible because the complaints will be on record. hope this helps.

Well heres the latest. just turned 15,000, and it seems like within a week I can add these problems. Shifting to park, it has to think about going there or sometimes just doesnt do it, you have to put it back in gear then park again. Drive to reverse, takes about 3 secs to engauge, sometimes it kicks real hard. Noticeable squeak when the A/C kicks on and off. Not sure how to explain this, the front end just seems loose. ex. going over bumps, i can feel it rattle. Last but not least, every time I let it idle the engine knocks, it fades in and out. oil is good I change it every 3,000. Its not the injectors. I had one guy tell me he thought it sounded like a stuck lifter. Any suggestions besides the dealer?

Yes I have that same knock/rattle noise at idle but for me its very light and I have also noticed that this noise is in sync with the rolling/shaky idle. I don't know if this is normal or not because my dealer has said that its normal (but i dont trust them). Interestingly enough, there is a tsb out for a rough running condition which might be worth mentioning to the dealer. Also there is a tsb for the delay when engaging reverse from park. I don't know what to say about the rattle that you are experiencing when going over bumps. It could be a loose exhaust or suspension component. The squeaking problem that you have with your A/C has a tsb as well but I dont think its anything serious (possibly fan clutch replacement). And I suggest mentioning these problems to an other dealer to find out his opinion. Also if he gives you the old "Its normal" bull****, just say something like i know two other '04 explorer owners with the same options as mine and theirs are fine. This usually convinces the dealer to at least look into the problem. Good luck
