We went and looked at a 2000 V10 Excursion today. We have been shopping for about a week now and this one seems to be the best deal. It will need brakes. The pedal has some travel to it and the rotors are warped but I can fix that. I never changed the front rotors on an Excursion before so what kind of time frame am I looking at for the front brakes?
With our trade in which we owe more than trade in value, we are looking at $17000 out the door, give or take a few cents. Black with tan leather int. It is a 4X4 and has a 6 disk CD changer. I think every thing else is kind of standard on the truck. It also has the towing package. Is this a fair deal?
I would have the dealer do the brakes as part of the deal. Never take it as is unless it is way below market value. Have you gone to your bank to ask them the fair market value. You didnt mention mileage, so the price could be very good, or maybe not.
I just picked up this ones twin this weekend. Mine only has 60k and didn't need anything to hit the road I paid $19,000 and I thought I did good, but if you can get them to put new brakes on it I would say you did better even after taking a $1,000 hit on trade.
This will be for the wife. I am driving a 1989 Centurion right now which I will sell and I then have a wrecked 98 mountianeer I need to repair for my daily driver.
We will work out better by a $1K which is more than what we expected to get. I called on the ones I found within 200 miles that had less than 60K miles but they were all sold already. Most everything else is in the high 80K mile range for the same price or higher with a few exceptions of course, but I don't want to drive all around the state either unless it was a low mileage truck. There are a couple local that have high 60K miles but the asking price is a bit high and they want to give me less for the trade in than what was offered today.
I would rather repair the brakes myself. This way I know I will buy the best parts for the repair and then it should be good to go for a while.
There is one thing that I just recalled about the truck that has me concerned and that is when I came to a stop it felt like the truck was pushed from behind right before we would come to a complete stop. I wrote this off because the brakes are so bad but now I am wondering if that is a sign of a bad trans or something else? I only felt this twice and not sure if it was how I was pushing on the break or not. If I put the truck in forward and then reverse it wouldn't repeat. Any clues or is it just the bad brakes which I must say again are pretty bad. I think there is some heavy glazed rotors on this truck.
It's not the practice I need I am just trying to keep the over all price down as much as I can. All said and down I am really only paying 12K for the truck tax and all and I get a few bucks back for the brake parts. So yes I believe they have discounted it more than enough to offset me repairing the brakes.
I am waiting on the carfax report now to check it out.
I asked about the repairing the brakes only to see if it is like a 78/79 4X4 brake job. That has been the only 4X4 brake job I have ever done excpet the dana 60 front axle in my old F250. I will guess that I need to remove all of the hub parts to remove the rotor like I would on the trucks I mentioned? If so do I use the same socket like on the 78 axle, I have this socket?
I don't have to have it inspected but if I were the inspector, NO they wouldn't pass.
I did some more calling around this morning and I can't beat the price I am getting right now. Of course I will find a better deal once I buy this one. That's how it always goes.
The brake change is as easy as replacing the rotors. You do not need to tear into the hub, however checking the bearing for excessive play and replacing at the time of a brake change is easier than doing it later. I would look very hard into upgrading with a set of performance rotors and pads. I did them on my 02 and love the extra stopping power. Anyway the rotor just slide over the hub and wheel studs.

Where do I go to buy performance brake parts for the Excursion? I tried to find the post regarding brakes on the Excursion at lucnh time today but ran out of time so I never found that post that I thought I saw over the weekend.
The paper work has been signed. We will pick it up tomorrow. I love the credit union I go to. They are fast!!
You may search the FTE site. I bought mine through www.truckperformance.com they are very good guys, they have a good website it's very easy to navigate. I have seen others in here with ART rotors and brakes, maybe they can help out with more info
I found a few places that sell performance brake parts and I will have to wait to buy that upgrade. We just don't have the funds or the time to wait for the pieces to come in the mail. I need to replace the brakes this weekend.
I did end up searching this forum and found the leads I speak of above. I may call and the one place has rotors for $179. I can swing that.
We got the V10 last night and for two reasons. One is the cost and I couldn't find a used PSD local any ways. If and when we buy again I can promise it will be a PSD.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with that V10.
Good luck on the brake job. I just changed my rotors and pads and ended up having to borrow pneumatic tools to get the caliper bracket bolts off. I didn't really round them too bad trying to get them off before I got the pneumatic tools, but I decided to go ahead and get new bolts from Ford to replace them. I haven't put them on yet, but they came with RED loctite already on the threads. RED loctite is what was on the originals as well.
