I just put the engine back in my truck and now it isn't charging. I had the alternator and voltage regulator checked and they are both fine. I put a voltmeter on the battery; it had 12.6 volts before I started it and 12.xx after I started it. I have checked all of the wires and I didn't see any breaks. I really don't think I hooked anything up wrong when I put the engine back in- I only disconnected the plug near the starter relay and the one from the voltage regulator. So, could any of you give me some ideas of what to start checking? Anybody have some wiring diagrams?
Ok, I rechecked the wires as best I could and didn't see any breaks, i also disconnected and reconnected the battery. Can someone tell me what wires on the alternator are positive and negative so I can prob them with a test light?
thanks alot
brad
I tested all of the wires and they all have power. One green wire has power in only the off position, if you turn the key to the on position it has no power.
So, what could the problem be?
Seifferlein, Why are you using a test light now ?? You said your battery was 12.6 using a volt meter. And now your just using a test light hmm. Well go get the voltmeter and hook the + plus wire to the big wire on the back and the other - to ground, set the meter to your volts again like you had it before. You will be reading the battery volts, then when it's started your'll be reading whats coming out of the alternator. if it's not charging the battery and the voltage is 12.6 still then the alternator is not working. This lager wire has a fuseable link in it and it hooks to the R side of the starter solenoid Thats
not the side going to the starter, it's the one coming from the Battery.
Hope this helps you in some way..my 2 cents

ok, i may be wrong here, but i always thought that the voltage regulator has a relay in there that does not allow charging of the battery when the battery is fully charged, but instead sends current to rest of system. my feeble 2 cents, maybe if you seeped some charge off that battery, you may see that the alternator charges or not
TJ, I believe the battery voltage should be around 14v when the engine is running. I don't think the fact that the battery is fully charged would have an impact on that. From the sounds of it this alternator is not working. If it's new and from Autozone, that might be the problem.

The first thing I would check is the ground. Pull the neg terminal off the battery, and then test for continuity between there and somewhere you can see bare metal on the block. if you painted the motor, the new paint could be insulating the block from the ground cable.
I agree with JOR on this one. The charging system should be charging the battery at just over 14v when the engine is running (around 1500 - 2200 RPM). If it is not charging at that rate, then the alternator is bad.
I finally figured it out. There were a couple of wires switched around and it turns out the regulator was bad even though I had it tested. thanks for the help
The last time I had to hang a new regulator I seem to remember the instructions saying that the reg should be bolted on/grounded before the wires are hooked up.
