I know that a 285 75 R16 tire will fit on stock wheels and stock suspension. Will a 70 series tire fit without rubbing ? At this point, I'm leaning toward Yoko Geolander H/T-S G051 if I can't go wider.
Any thoughts? I have installed Billsteins. It was a big improvement. I have FS Steeltex R4S on a 2000 XLT. I assume that this isn't one of the recall tires. Michelins are too expensive. I could also go with Pirelli, although I hated them on my old 77 SL and took them off and went back to Michelins. They were too soft and squirrelly
70's would be shorter.
the width is the first # 285mm then the aspect ratio in other words a 75 will have a sidewall height of 75% of the width. Example a 100/50/16 would be 100 mm wide each side wall would be 50mm so if you add the rim @ 16" to 50 + 50 you will get the tire height. OK if you convert the 16" to MM or visa-versa.
I just put the Yoko Geolander AT+2's 285 75 R16's on my 2000 4x4 xlt. Also just put on the Rancho RSX shocks all the way around. The ride is alittle stiffer but what a big differance. I tow a 24' Pace enclosed trailer and it made a big dif on how it tows..no more bounce. New stering stabalizer is next a Rancho, and a Westin bull bar.

The Bilsteins stiffened the ride some also. I want to put the widest tires that I can fit on the rim without rubbing. Do you like the Yokos? How much were they and did you buy them online?
I guess that I'm confused about how this works. I thought that a 60 was wider than a 70 and that a 50 was wider than a 60 and so on. My assumption was that a 40 was a VERY wide tire. Is this wrong?
Yes that is wrong, again 1st # is width in MM, that is the only # to affect width. The 2nd is the height of the side wall in aspect to the width. 3rd is the rim size.
Thanks, I didn't realize that. I guess that the 285 is the safest bet. I called Firestone since I have Steeltex R4S tires and not AT. The guy said the he had heard talk about the R4Ss. I asked if they were on recall or not. He said " take it to a FS dealer". You think that the number listed in the recall website would know what is and isn't recalled.
I asked my Firestone dealer AND the 800 number listed in the recall why the R4S's were not recalled even though Firestone states the recall is to upgrade the load rating from D to E when the R4S's are load range D. Neither place could give me an answer. I don't recall which, but one stated we have had no reported problems with that tire........I said somebody has to be first and I would prefer it's not my wife and kid. All they stated was sorry, we can't help you. I did have the Firestone dealer submit my concern to Firestone via computer (while I watched) to have my concerned documented in the event there is a problem in the future. Good luck & keep us all updated.
Yeah but it was not because they were 60's I used to think the same thing. But it is the way the tires were sized, in order to keep the wide tire the same height they had to have a shorter side wall aspect. So it was just coincidence that 60's were wider.
